Day-by-Day Bangkok Itinerary

1
Grand Palace, Wat Pho & Chao Phraya River
~$35

Morning: Start at the Grand Palace (entry ฿500 / ~$14) — arrive before 9am to beat the crowds. Dress code enforced: cover knees and shoulders. Spend 2 hours here.

Midday: Walk to Wat Pho next door (entry ฿200 / ~$6) — home of the massive Reclining Buddha. Get a traditional Thai massage here — ฿420 for 30 minutes — best value massage in Bangkok.

Afternoon: Take the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun (entry ฿100 / ~$3). The climb gives stunning views back towards the Grand Palace. Cost: ฿5 for the ferry.

Evening: Take a Chao Phraya Express Boat north to the Phra Athit pier (฿15). Explore Khao San Road — have dinner and a cold Chang beer. Budget ฿150–200 for dinner.

2
Chatuchak Market, MBK & Street Food Day
~$25

Morning: Chatuchak Weekend Market (Saturday or Sunday only — 8,000 stalls, free entry). Best for clothes, art, plants and food. Budget ฿300–500 for shopping.

Midday: Take the BTS to MBK Center — 8 floors of shopping. Best place to buy electronics, phone accessories and budget clothes. Even if you don't buy, it's fascinating.

Evening: Street food dinner on Yaowarat Road (Bangkok's Chinatown). The best food street in Bangkok. Try: Pad Thai (฿60), Tom Yum soup (฿80), mango sticky rice (฿50). Total dinner under ฿300.

3
Day Trip to Ayutthaya — Ancient Capital
~$30

Ayutthaya is Bangkok's best day trip and seriously underrated. It was the capital of Thailand before Bangkok and the ruins are UNESCO-listed. Travel time: 90 minutes by train from Hua Lamphong station (฿20 one way).

Rent a bicycle at the station for ฿50/day and cycle between the ruins — Wat Mahathat (the Buddha head in the tree roots), Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Entry to each ruin: ฿50–100.

Have lunch at a local restaurant near the ruins — fish and rice for ฿80. Return to Bangkok by 6pm. Total day cost including train, bicycle, entry fees and food: around ฿1,000 ($28).

4
Jim Thompson House, Lumphini Park & Rooftop Bar
~$40

Morning: Jim Thompson House (฿200 entry) — the beautiful Thai silk mansion of the American businessman who disappeared mysteriously in 1967. Fascinating guided tour included.

Midday: Lumphini Park — Bangkok's version of Central Park. Free entry. Rent a pedal boat on the lake for ฿40. Watch the massive monitor lizards (they're harmless!).

Evening: Head to Vertigo Rooftop Bar at Banyan Tree Hotel for sunset drinks — one cocktail is enough for the view (฿500). Then dinner at a local restaurant in Silom area.

5
Asiatique, Floating Market & Goodbye Bangkok
~$30

Morning: Damnoen Saduak Floating Market — a 90-minute bus ride from Bangkok (฿40). This is the classic Thai floating market with boats selling fruits, food and souvenirs. Go before 10am for the best experience before tour groups arrive.

Afternoon: Return to Bangkok. Visit ICON Siam shopping mall on the riverside — free entry, incredible architecture, amazing food hall.

Evening: Asiatique The Riverfront — night market with a Ferris wheel, restaurants and live shows. Free entry. Take the free shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier.
