Morning: Start at the Grand Palace (entry ฿500 / ~$14) — arrive before 9am to beat the crowds. Dress code enforced: cover knees and shoulders. Spend 2 hours here.

Ayutthaya is Bangkok's best day trip and seriously underrated. It was the capital of Thailand before Bangkok and the ruins are UNESCO-listed. Travel time: 90 minutes by train from Hua Lamphong station (฿20 one way).
Rent a bicycle at the station for ฿50/day and cycle between the ruins — Wat Mahathat (the Buddha head in the tree roots), Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Entry to each ruin: ฿50–100.
Have lunch at a local restaurant near the ruins — fish and rice for ฿80. Return to Bangkok by 6pm. Total day cost including train, bicycle, entry fees and food: around ฿1,000 ($28).

Afternoon: Return to Bangkok. Visit ICON Siam shopping mall on the riverside — free entry, incredible architecture, amazing food hall.
